Aoshima Shrine An island of the gods lush with palm trees

Aoshima is a small island with a circumference of about 1.5 kilometers that is rich with palm trees and other subtropical plants that will put you in a relaxing Southern mood. In ancient times, the island was considered sacred and restricted from the general public, but now anyone can walk across the connecting “Yayoi Bridge” to reach the island for worship. The deities of Yamasachihiko and Princess Toyotama are enshrined here, and a variety of amulets and spots for such prayers as marriage and safe delivery may be enjoyed at the shrine. For example, you can find the adorable heart “Marriage Charm,” the “Onna-mamori” women’s power-up amulet, or the arrow-shaped “Good Luck Fortune”. A classic Southern-style stamp book may be a nice way to commemorate your travels.

Deamon's Washboard Majestic beauty formed over many year
Deamon’s Washboard
Majestic beauty formed over many year

The wavy rocks surrounding Aojima are a beauty that was formed naturally by the continued washing of waves on a geological formation in the sea from about 700 million years ago. Once used to scrub dirt from clothes, the washboard is no longer used regularly in Japan, but if you imagine a large demon scrubbing with the rocks, you may be able to see the scenery in a different way. When the tide recedes, you can also play on the rocks.

Takachiho-kyo The mysterious gorge

Takachiho is believed to be a place where Gods first descended from the heavens, and well known as one of the most spiritual sites in Japan. The mysterious gorge called ‘Takachiho-kyo,’ in particular, engulfs its visitors completely with a feeling of refreshing energy. Takachiho-kyo was formed when the lava from Mt. Aso eruption cooled and hardened, and after a period of time the rock eroded into a V-shaped gorge of approximately 7 kilometers in length. Walking along the promenade enables you to fully enjoy the gorge beauty, including Manai no Taki, one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls and a popular highlight of the site. This 17-meter-high waterfall can also be experienced from rental boats available, allowing visitors to look up and gaze at this spectacularly stunning wonder. It is said that ‘Nagashi somen,’ flowing noodles idea originated in Takachiho-kyo area and several restaurants serve the noodle dish. Why don’t you try it, too?
